In this tutorial we'll create a beautiful Valentine's Day card entirely in Adobe Illustrator. We'll use vector shapes, gradients, the Pen tool and decorative lettering to produce a print-ready card design.
What You'll Need
Adobe Illustrator (any recent version), basic familiarity with the Pen tool and Pathfinder panel. The entire design uses vector shapes — no raster images required.
Step-by-Step
- Set up your artboard. Create a new document at 5×7 inches (127×178mm), 300dpi for print. Use a rich black background (#1a0a0a) to make colours pop.
- Draw the heart shape. Use the Pen tool or draw two overlapping circles and merge them using the Unite option in Pathfinder. Scale to fill roughly 60% of the artboard width.
- Apply a gradient fill. Use a radial gradient from a warm coral (#FF6B8A) at the centre to a deep crimson (#8B0030) at the edges. This gives the heart depth and dimension.
- Add decorative elements. Small scattered dots, thin line flourishes and delicate leaf shapes frame the central heart. Use a pale gold (#E8C97A) or blush pink (#FFDDE8) for contrast.
- Set the typography. Choose a script font for the main message — something flowing and romantic. Place it inside or below the heart. Use Oswald or a condensed sans for a secondary line in a smaller size.
- Adjust and refine. Check that the composition reads well at thumbnail size. Ensure there is adequate visual breathing room around the text. Save as PDF for print and export a PNG for digital use.
Tips
Keep your colour palette tight — two or three colours maximum. Too many colours dilutes the romantic, focused feeling of the design. And always preview your card at the actual print size before sending to a printer.
